OTHER INFORMATION:
Aircraft
was approximately two miles southwest of Marathon Airport when the
engine started to lose power and subsequently ditched in about 20
feet of salt water in the Straits of Florida. The aircraft touched
down on the water and flipped over. While
the aircraft was in the salt water it righted itself and a pair of
straps on the barge crane were used to place it on the barge and
transport it to shore. Removal of the fabric, instruments and
pressure cleaning of the fuselage was accomplished. Initial rinse
was accomplished within 24 hours of retrieval. Approximately
10 days later a second rinse was accomplished and the engine was
drained, rinsed to remove salt water, and then oil sprayed. NTSB Probable Cause states “fuel starvation and an interruption in engine power during maneuvering” LOCATION: Aircraft located at Air & Sea Storage, Fort Pierce, Florida.
